A honey bee buzzes around a black bear who reaches for the honey comb in this black cherry sculpture.

  • Black cherry
  • Twisted steel rod
  • Pine cone

When I cut down a dead cherry tree in the mountains of North Carolina to use for forked boards in my Mountain Man with Raven relief, I used the hollow trunk for this carving of a black bear after the honey in a bee nest.

The bear is about 5’ tall. The nest is made from a cherry burl and a branch from another tree. The nest is supported by a twisted, 1/2″ steel bar which becomes the buzzing path of the bee, made from the core of a large pine cone.
